This project involved designing a two-story family home on a challenging lot with an awkward shape and limited space. The goal was to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing home that maximized the use of the available land while ensuring a comfortable living space for a growing family. The house needed four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with the majority of the bedrooms placed on the first floor for accessibility. The design also aimed to maintain an open concept layout, blending communal living spaces with the necessary privacy for family members.
As the lead designer for the initial concept, I was responsible for formulating the layout and architectural approach for the home. I worked closely with the client to understand their needs, focusing on creating a home that was both practical and inviting. My role involved developing the floor plan, ensuring an effective use of space, and addressing specific challenges such as the unusual shape of the lot and the need for an open yet private home layout.
Given the constraints, my primary challenge was designing a home that felt spacious and open while accommodating the functional requirements of four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The solution was a two-story design that places the majority of the bedrooms on the first floor for accessibility, while the second floor would be dedicated to more private, multi-functional spaces such as a family room or home office. I aimed to maximize natural light with large windows and an open floor plan in the central living areas, blending the kitchen, dining, and living room into a cohesive space.
The final design successfully addressed the challenges posed by the lot, creating a family home that feels both open and private. The placement of the bedrooms on the first floor ensures ease of access, while the second story offers more private or flexible spaces. The open-concept design of the living areas fosters a sense of connection and flow, making it ideal for family life. The project also proved that even with difficult lot shapes, creative thinking and thoughtful design can result in a home that meets the needs of its residents.
